What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great religious significance for Muslims around the world. It is considered the holiest month in Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset, refraining from eating or drinking (including water), as well as abstaining from other physical needs and desires.
The fasting period during Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink but also emphasizes spiritual reflection, self-discipline, patience, empathy, and devotion to Allah (God). It is a time for Muslims to deepen their connection with their faith, seek forgiveness for their sins, and engage in acts of kindness and generosity.
The fast is broken each day with a meal called iftar, which is often initiated with the eating of dates and followed by a larger meal. The pre-dawn meal is known as suhoor. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival that includes communal prayers, feasting, and the exchange of gifts. Eid al-Fitr is a time of joy and thanksgiving for the spiritual growth achieved during Ramadan.
